There is a common idea that a yoga practice has to happen in a studio.
You find the class. You work around the schedule. You drive there, park, roll out your mat, and fit yourself into the rhythm of the room. For some people, that works beautifully. For others, it simply doesn’t.
Sometimes the hardest part of maintaining a consistent movement practice has very little to do with motivation and everything to do with real life. Work runs late. Family schedules shift. Mornings are packed. Evenings disappear. A studio class that looks perfect on paper can become difficult to make happen consistently.
That is one of the reasons I love private yoga.
Instead of asking someone to build their life around a class schedule, the practice can come to them. And that changes more than just the commute.
A PRACTICE THAT STARTS WITH THE PERSON
One of the foundations of Root & Radiance Yoga is the belief that yoga should meet the person where they are. Not the other way around.
In a private session, there is space to understand what someone actually wants from their practice.
Maybe they want to build strength.
Maybe they want better mobility and balance.
Maybe they already love yoga but want more individualized guidance.
Maybe they want a stronger vinyasa practice one week and something slower the next.
Or maybe they simply want movement to feel more accessible and realistic within their schedule.
There is no need to fit into a predetermined experience. The practice can be shaped around the person.
THE BEAUTY OF A PRIVATE PRACTICE
There is also something really special about deciding what you want the experience itself to feel like. For some people, the beauty of private yoga is having the practice completely to themselves.
It is an hour without comparison, distraction, or the energy of a larger room. There is space to ask questions, explore movement, be challenged, slow down, or simply have someone’s full attention on the practice in front of you.
But private doesn’t necessarily have to mean alone. Sometimes movement feels even better when it is shared. A partner, close friend, family member, or someone you simply enjoy spending time with can practice alongside you. At Root & Radiance, a private session can be just for you, or it can include you and one other person at the same session rate.
I love that flexibility. You can choose the quiet intimacy of a practice that is entirely your own, or create an experience with someone else—moving together, encouraging one another, laughing when things don’t go perfectly, and making time for something that feels good for both of you. Both are personal. They are simply personal in different ways.
CONVENIENCE CAN CREATE CONSISTENCY
I think convenience is often underestimated when we talk about wellness. We tend to think that if something matters enough, we should simply make time for it. But most people are already balancing a lot.
Removing the drive, the parking, the waiting, and the need to make a specific studio hour can turn yoga from something that sounds good in theory into something that actually becomes part of someone’s routine. That matters. Because consistency usually isn’t built through perfect circumstances. It is built by making movement easier to return to.
When yoga happens in your own space, at a time that fits your life, there can be less friction around showing up. And sometimes that is exactly what allows a practice to grow.
MORE THAN FLEXIBILITY
Private yoga also gives us the opportunity to look beyond stretching. The way I instruct is rooted in the relationship between mobility, stability, and strength. Mobility gives us access to movement. Stability helps us control it. Strength allows us to use that movement with confidence. A private setting gives us time to explore those pieces more intentionally.
We can slow something down. We can look at how the body is moving. We can modify. We can build. We can ask questions. And we can spend more time on what is actually useful to the person in front of me. That might mean working on hip mobility, shoulder range, balance, core strength, or simply learning how to feel more connected and confident in movement.
The goal is not to perform yoga perfectly. The goal is to make the practice meaningful.
SOME DAYS STRONG. SOME DAYS SLOW.
Private yoga is also flexible in another important way. Not every day requires the same thing. Some days, movement can feel energizing and strong. Other days, the body may need more space, breath, stretching, and restoration.
A private practice can respond to that. It does not have to live in one category. It can evolve with the person, the season, the schedule, and even the day. That is something I value deeply about one-on-one work. There is room to listen.
YOGA THAT FITS REAL LIFE
At its best, yoga is not something separate from life. It supports how we move through it. It can help us feel stronger, steadier, more aware, and more connected to ourselves—and sometimes to one another. But for that to happen, the practice has to be something we can actually return to.
Sometimes that means going to a studio. Sometimes that means practicing at home. Sometimes it means carving out an hour completely for yourself. And sometimes it means rolling out two mats and sharing that hour with someone you love.
There is no one way to practice. There is only the question of what helps you show up consistently, move with intention, and feel more at home in your body. That is where I believe the practice begins.
